STAGECOACH STOP
Here's a place anyone born in the
Tarrytowns in the '40s or '50s may
well remember (top). The authentic
"Stage Coach Stop" is still located
in this unincorporated portion of
the Town of Greenburgh called
"Glenville." Before the building of
the Cross-Westchester Expressway,
most Tarrytowners on their way
to Elmsford or White Plains drove
right past this establishment.
It has apparently been convert-
ed into a private residence, the
address now listed as Old White
Plains Rd. (I've seen different
street numbers designated). The
building is located just across the
street from the area once hosting
the round "Westchester Premiere
Theater." In more recent times, the
"Westchester Marriott Hotel" was
built just a bit further east (and
across the street).
There remains a classic New
York State Historic Site
marker in front--the familiar
yellow letters--on a blue back-
ground. (Follow the 1st link
below--to view this sign--it's
the next-to-last one pictured
there.) The text thereon notes
the building's various past
uses, including as an actual
stagecoach stop.
As for an elderly man who--
near this location--would
often be sitting outside,
waving at each passing car:
I remember him situated
closer to town; somewhere
on the north side of
Benedict Ave.; but less
than a half-mile from the
pictured location.
